BEST JUNEAU SHORE EXCURSIONS
Juneau offers a great variety of shore excursions for
everyone to enjoy. From whale watching to helicopter
glacier flights you should be able to find something
wonderful to do here.

JUNEAU WHALE WATCH TOURS
The most popular tour in Juneau is whale watching at Auke
Bay. All Juneau whale watch tours go to basically the same
location so pick your tour based on the size of the boat,
price and past passenger reviews. We highly recommend
Harv and Marv's whale watch tour based on our terrific tour
with them last summer. Not any did we see several
humpback whales, we also had the incredible luck to
experience a pod of orca whales go under our boat (a little
scary! Note the size of the boat in the photo above) and
surface two feet from the front where my teenage daughter
was standing. Another private whale watch tour company
with a great reputation is Orca Enterprises.

This year the Alaska Tour Saver book includes a coupon for
2-for-1 Juneau Alaska Whale Watch Tours with Alaska
Whale Watching. We are booked on this tour for June so
check back mid-summer for reviews on this fairly new
company. With whale watch tours running around $150 per
person and 2-for-1 savings is a great deal.

JUNEAU HELICOPTER GLACIER TOURS
If you plan to take a helicopter tour while on your Alaska
cruise, the best place for this is Juneau. Most helicopter
tours offer a glacier landing while some also offer a
combination dog sled/glacier landing tour. The two most
popular helicopter tours are TEMSCO and COASTAL. The
regular glacier landing tours cost around $250 while the dog
sled combo tours run about $450 per person.

MENDENHALL GLACIER TOURS
The third most popular shore excursion in Juneau is a visit
to beautiful Mendenhall Glacier. If you don't want to book a
tour to visit, there are buses which run from town to
Mendenhall about every 30 minutes.

Icy Straits Alaska Shore Excursions

Icy Strait Point is by far my favorite Alaskan cruise port. The village at Icy Strait Point as well as the neighboring Hoonah are as close to what most visitors expect Alaska to be than any other port.

ICY STRAIT POINT WHALE WATCH TOURS
The number one excursion in Icy Strait Point is whale watching. Point Adolphus is one of the premier whale watching destinations in the world so seeing whales is
guaranteed. Many times we were able to see whales, sea lions and eagles are feeding at the same location. If you're a photographer this is the best
location for whale shots.

F.I.S.H.E.S. WHALE WATCH TOUR
I have first hand experience with Floyd and Margie of F.I.S.H.E.S. and highly recommend their whale watch tour. He takes a maxiumum of 6 passengers which

GLACIER WIND CHARTERS AT ICY STRAITS
This past summer I booked a whale watch tour with Shawn McConnell with Glacier Wind Charters who also enjoys a good reputation. We saw so many whales on this tour we begin to lose count. It takes about 15-20 minutes to get to Point Adolphus where the whales hang out all summer. There's an insurance commercial currently airing featuring whales breaching in this cove. Shawn and his wife are both very nice and easy to work with. I highly recommend his tour also.

If at all possible, book an independent whale watch tour in Icy Strait instead of a ship sponsored shore excursion. The ship's tours are packed and don't provide an individual, customized experience. Many passengers have been unhappy about the ship's tours in Icy Strait Point.

ICY STRAIT POINT ZIP LINE
The second most popular shore excursion at Icy Strait Point is the zip line which claims to be the longest zip line in the world at 5, 330 feet. It looks like tons of fun. In fact you can watch the zip liners from the Icy Strait
Point beach area.

BEAR WATCH TOURS AT ICY STRAIT POINT
The third most popular tour is the bear watch tours at Icy Strait. Teckk Outfitters, a local wildlife tour operator, offers bear watch tours as well as customized fishing tours. He is well known for his bear watch tours from his van. This year he is also offering whale watch tours.

OFFICE BAR AT HOONAH
If you have time, be sure to try the fresh crab at the Office Bar in Hoonah. Hoonah is only a short walk from the dock at Icy Strait Point. Most local tour operators will be happy to drop you off at the restaurant after the tour if you like.

Roseau Valley Treasures Tour in Dominica

I absolutely loved the Roseau Valley Treasures Tour in Dominica led by Levi Baron of Bumpiing Tours. Levi offers a variety of tours and hikes for cruise ship passengers with most tours stopping at Titou Gorge, Trafalgar Falls and the Sulfur Springs. Some of Levi's tours involve a great deal of strenuous hiking so be sure to advise him of your physical ability and limitations beforehand so he can personally point you to the best tour.

We opted for the Roseau Valley Treasures Wet Tour because we wanted to see as much of Dominica as we could without hiking. We've traveled to almost all of the Caribbean Islands and found Dominica to be the most beautiful and lush. Everywhere you look there are gorgeous blooming plants, flowers and trees. Levi does a great job of pointing out the various plants, many I've never seen before such as almond, cashew and cocoa trees.
